- A compound curve combines an overturn and an underturn. Keep the change of direction smooth, with space inside the centre curve.
- 01 Enter lightly: begin with a light upstroke. Reach the top line before turning.
- 02 Press down: let pressure build after the turn. Keep the downstroke steady.
- 03 Release and rise: release before the baseline. Finish with another light upstroke.
- Notice: if the centre closes, slow down the turn rather than making the whole shape wider. Practise one row, then circle the movement that felt most controlled.

Do I need calligraphy experience?
No. The Modern Calligraphy Starter Book begins with the tools, page position and the difference between light and heavy lines. The other guides give you a clear next stage when you are ready.
What tools will I need?
The guides discuss paper, ink, a suitable pen holder and nib, plus a pencil and ruler for some planning exercises. Read the materials notes and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for every product you use.
Is a fountain pen or brush pen the same thing?
The collection focuses on pointed-pen modern calligraphy. Other pens can be useful for lettering, but their pressure and line behaviour differ. Use the tool specified for each exercise.
Is this a physical workbook?
