- A thumbnail is a small, quick plan. It lets you compare arrangements before ink, paper and careful lettering raise the stakes.
- A One line: quiet and direct.
- B Two levels: a larger first idea.
- C Centred: balanced around an axis.
- D Off-centre: space used deliberately.
- Try three first: draw three small rectangles. Place only blocks and lines inside them. Choose the clearest plan before you begin lettering.
